Down the Higher One Rabbit Hole with Kyle Summerfield

February 1, 2014 By Eric Caine Leave a Comment

Down the Higher One Rabbit Hole with Kyle Summerfield Note: Despite problems with the courts, the controversial financing practices of Higher One haven’t stopped hundreds of college administrations from hiring Higher One to disburse financial aid. Here, Merced College student Kyle Summerfield offers a graphic account of his own experience with the Higher One “Blue Card.” My name is Kyle Summerfield. Higher One: Busted Again?

November 16, 2013 By Eric Caine Leave a Comment

On November 6,  Inside Higher Education reported that Higher One, the provider of debit cards on hundreds of college campuses, including Modesto Junior College and Merced College, is in trouble again. Incidentally, a recent report from Bloomberg claims Higher One is for sale. Does that mean Higher One […]

Is Your College Betting Against Students with Higher One?

August 31, 2013 By Eric Caine Leave a Comment

Editor’s note: The earliest version of this story did not explain the difference between the budget “reserve” and a budget “surplus.” A sharp-eyed reader caught the error, and we have added a parenthetical explanation below. Thanks to our vigilant readers for the help, always. At Merced College, the trouble with Higher One began during the second week of the fall semester. That’s when the College administration learned many students would […]
